Our research, which is supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, primarily involves using positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to study cerebrovascular regulation following acute intracerebral hemorrhage, ischemic stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, and traumatic brain injury, and in Alzheimer’s disease. Current areas of active research include investigation of the impact of various therapeutic interventions on cerebral blood flow and oxygen and glucose metabolism in these conditions, the utility of a novel neuroimaging tool for predicting outcome following lobar intracerebral hemorrhage, and the effect of cardiac transplantation and mechanical assist devices on cerebral hemodynamics, cerebral oxygen metabolism, and cognition in severe congestive heart failure. Nearly all of these studies involve acutely or critically ill patients and are made possible by the fact that our Neuro-ICU is the only in the country with a PET scanner located on site. This facility is equipped as any other patient room in the ICU and contains all the necessary equipment to care for critically ill patients
