What to Expect At Your Appointment
What should I bring to my appointment?
We hope that you are able to complete your new patient paperwork before your appointment. If not, please bring it with you. It is a good idea to bring a copy of your new patient paperwork with you even if you sent it in already.
Please bring a current list of medications with you to the appointment. Better yet, you could bring your actual medications.
Please bring glasses and wear hearing aides if needed. You will be asked to do some reading, so don’t forget reading glasses.
If you have had any imaging (CT, MRI or PET scans) of your brain, please bring a copy of the report and a copy of the images (on CD) with you to the appointment. This is not necessary if you had the imaging done at Barnes Hospital, Barnes West County, Missouri Baptist or other hospitals in the BJC system.
What will happen at the appointment?
A medical assistant or nurse will check your vital signs, height and weight. You will then take paper and pencil testing (this takes approximately 30 minutes). While you are doing this testing, your provider will be speaking with the person you bring with you to find out more information about how you are doing. The doctor or nurse practitioner will then meet with you, perform a neurologic exam and talk to you about your memory. The doctor or nurse practitioner will make recommendations regarding medications, further testing and other therapies that will help with your memory and thinking.
How long will the appointment take?
A new patient appointment will take an hour to an hour and a half. A follow-up appointment will take 30 minutes to an hour. Please arrive 10 minutes early for your appointment to allow time to check in. We recommend that you allow 15 -30 minutes to park and find your way to the clinic.
What kind of testing will I have to take?
We ask that you take some paper and pencil testing during your visit; you will be asked to remember some things and do some simple tests. The testing is not difficult and you may enjoy some of it. Our testers are all experienced and will do their best to help you relax during the testing. This testing can help our team determine if you are having a problem with your memory and thinking.
Is there any way to prepare for the paper and pencil testing?
There is no need to prepare, just relax and do your best.
