Neurologic Rehabilitation is a branch of Clinical Neuroscience specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological injuries to the brain with an emphasis on the restoration or compensation of motor, sensory, and cognitive deficits following stroke, brain injury, or other insults (tumors, anoxia, etc). The goal is to restore the function of patients as much as possible to their pre-injury level.
Our 40-bed inpatient unit at the Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis is staffed by medical, nursing, and therapy personnel specifically trained in the assessment and rehabilitation of neurological injuries. We use state-of-the-art behavioral and pharmacological interventions to improve function. Technology-based rehabilitation methods including weight supported treadmill gait training, robotic-enhanced gait training, and functional electrical stimulation are being evaluated. The unit includes an eight-bed structured care unit specialized in the care of behavioral and cognitive deficits after traumatic brain injury. The clinical services collaborate with WUMS physicians and scientists on several NIH funded projects focused on recovery of function and novel rehabilitation interventions.
Brain Injury and Stroke Rehabilitation
Specialty clinics are available for patients with specific needs:
Neuropsychology Clinic: Conducts assessments and makes recommendations for treatment, based on objective testing of memory and thinking skills
Evidence-based Aphasia Clinic: For patients with communication difficulties
Concussion Clinic: For patients with mild to moderate concussion symptoms.
In addition to the primary clinical mission, the services also provide a training and research environment. Clinicians of all types are trained, included physicians (physiatry, neurology, and geriatrics), nurses, therapists, social workers, and neuro-psychologists.
Training
The rehabilitation sections (stroke, brain injury, spinal cord injury) maintain an accredited residency program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. We support 15 positions with entry levels at PGY-I and PGY-II. We encourage applicants with diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Our group of rehabilitation specialists also offers fellowships in the following areas:
