The mission of the Cerebrovascular Diseases Section is:

To provide for patients with acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke rapid and accurate diagnosis and the best treatments that are currently available. The members of the Stroke Team with the Emergency Department and the Neurological Critical Care Section in the management of acutely ill patients.

To provide outpatient stroke prevention service to patients with risk of developing strokes.

To improve stroke prevention and care through research into the pathophysiology of human stroke and its response to therapy.

To develop new therapeutic strategies by studying animal stroke models. The animal experiments are carried out in the Hope Center for Neurological Disorders.

To conduct clinical trials to test the therapeutic efficacy of new treatment regimens.

To train health professionals in the application of evidence-based medicine to the prevention and treatment of stroke.

The Washington University School of Medicine Stroke Service is based at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, which serves as a local stroke center for the Saint Louis metropolitan area and a referral center for the central Midwest. Barnes-Jewish Hospital is certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Over 1400 patients with cerebrovascular disease are admitted each year.

The Cerebrovascular Diseases Section has two NIH Program Project grants, one each in the clinical and basic neuroscience of cerebrovascular disease, an NIH grant to conduct a multi-center clinical trial and numerous other research awards.

The Cerebrovascular Disease Section of the Department of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis offers one year of ACGME-accredited training in the sub-specialty of Vascular Neurology. One or two additional years of training in basic or clinical research is available for those interested in an academic career.
