Neurocritical Care Fellowship

Fellowship Program

The two-year fellowship is accredited by the United Council of Neurological Specialties (UCNS) and offers comprehensive clinical training in Neurocritical Care, as well as extensive exposure to clinical research. Two positions are available each year. As of 2010 we will be participating in the Neurocritical Care Society's fellowship match program.

The first year is dedicated to developing 1) core critical care skills such as cardiovascular and respiratory management, 2) invasive bedside procedures and monitoring along with 3) expertise in neurological management of patients with complex neurological and neurosurgical disorders.

During second year, the fellows can spend time conducting independent clinical or basic research projects in collaboration with a faculty member. Time is available for electives in other intensive care units or on the Stroke service. At the end of the experience, the fellow should be well trained to pursue an academic career as a neurointensivist.

The NNICU also serves as a focus for investigations. The unit is the only Neuro ICU in the country to house a PET scanner in the unit. PET studies are investigating the physiologic responses to therapeutic interventions in patients with cerebral infarction, acute intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage and traumatic brain injury.

Another area of research involves the measurement and prediction of functional outcome following acute neurologic insults. An extensive database, established over nine years ago, contains data on diagnoses, interventions, complications and functional outcome of patients admitted to the ICU in order to facilitate outcomes research.

Application consists of a CV, statement describing your career goals and three letters of reference. We will participate in the matching program sponsored by the Neurocritical Care Society. Up to date details can be found on their website http://neurocriticalcare.org

Interviews for fellowship positions for 2011 will be held April-June 2010; applications must be complete (including letters) before scheduling interviews.
