Rehabilitation of everyday memory impairment in Parkinson disease: A Pilot study

WHAT IS THE TITLE OF THE STUDY?
Rehabilitation of everyday memory impairment in Parkinson disease: A pilot study.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY?
The purpose of this research is to develop and test the efficacy of a strategy to improve memory in individuals with Parkinson disease.

WHO IS NEEDED?
1)
Volunteers must be diagnosed with PD.
2)
Volunteers can be males or females over 50 years of age.
3)
Volunteers must not be experiencing any problems with thinking and memory that interfere with their daily activities.
4)
Volunteers must not have a history of brain surgery or other neurological problems besides PD.
5)
People taking certain medications or with other serious systemic health problems (e.g., heart failure) will be excluded.

WHAT IS INVOLVED IF I PARTICIPATE?
Duration: This study involves filling out questionnaires about your memory, mood, and daily activities; taking thinking and memory tests; and having someone who knows you well fill out a questionnaire about your memory. You will also be taught a strategy that may improve your memory on the memory tests and in daily life. There will be 3 in-clinic testing sessions, each about 2 hours long. You can be on your regular antiparkinsonian medications for these sessions. The questionnaires you fill out will take under 20 minutes, and the questionnaire someone fills out about you will take under 10 minutes.
Tests/Procedures:
Questionnaires, memory and thinking tests (interview and computer), learning a memory strategy
Risks: Risks will be discussed with volunteers as part of the informed consent process and involve mild discomforts like boredom, fatigue or frustration with some of the tests.
Benefits:
There are no known direct benefits for participating in this study. Participants may benefit from the memory strategy.
Compensation:
Participants are compensated $20 for each study visit ($60 total). We will also cover your parking costs.
