PhD: University of New Mexico School of Medicine, 2005
Residency: Pediatrics, 2007-present

I've been also into running for several years and I am beginning to pick it up again after an arduous intern year. I love spending time with my kids and my wife. I enjoy good Chinese and Mexican food. I am a sucker for Americas Funniest Home Videos and Magicians Secrets Revealed (for some reason!). Although I love reading a good intriguing honest book, I must confess I occasionally enjoy a cheesy medical novel.
Professional interests: My professional interests are in the area of epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases, and translational neurobiology. As a scientist I trained as a neurophysiologist and thus I am interested in epilepsy and mechanisms of neuronal plasticity as they relate to disease. I hope to join a faculty in an academic institution that nurtures translational medicine.

Mathula Thangarajh, MD, PhD: Mathula Thangarajh, MD, PhD Mathula Thangarajh, MD, PhD

Hometown: I grew up in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu, India a city by the banks of River Cauvery in Southern India; my folks still reside there and I call Tiruchirapalli my "first" home.
MBBS: I studied Medicine at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India situated about 100 kilometers south-west of the capital, Chennai. Graduated 1997. CMC was begun as a one-bed hospital by an American missionary, Ida Scudder. (The story of how she was inspired to begin a hospital in Southern India is a separate story by itself.)
MS: Graduate School of Neural and Behavioral Sciences, Tuebingen, Germany, 2002
PhD: Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden, 2007
Residency: Department of Neurological Sciences, Christian Medical College, 1997-1998
Developmental Pediatrics, Christian Medical College, 1998-1999
Outside interests: In Stockholm, I was part of a creative-writing circle, an interest I am keen to revive again. My favorite activities are biking, ice-skating and alpine-skiing. Saint Louis is no comparison to Stockholm but I am trying to make it my "new" home.
Professional interests: After medical school, I spent two years in Tuebingen, a charming University town in Southern Germany, where I studied Neurobiology. Part of those two years was spent in a Neuroimmunology laboratory, wherein began my interest in B lymphocytes and multiple sclerosis (MS). As part of my graduate studies at Karolinska Institutet, our laboratory studied biomarkers to predict disease course in MS.

I have a nascent interest in neuro-oncology, especially in the area of tumor senescence, and in demyelinating diseases of the CNS. My other areas of interest are in the public understanding of science, sparked by the recent decrease in childhood immunization, and in science writing.

Above all, I hope to be an advocate for children and their well-being.
In the meantime, I wish for a pair of wings.
