Vascular Neurology Fellowship

The Cerebrovascular Disease Section of the Department of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis offers an ACGME accredited training program in the subspecialty of Vascular Neurology beginning July 1, 2004. This one-year program offers extensive training in both research and clinical care through a comprehensive program of didactic teaching and hands-on clinical experience. Vascular Neurology residents will participate in the following training rotations:

In-patient Stroke Service - 3 months

Neurocritical Care - 2 months

Stroke Rehabilitation - 2 months

Interventional Neuroradiology - 1 month

Stroke Rehabilitation - 2 months

Research - 4 months (includes vacation)

Emergency evaluation of patients acute stroke for thrombolytic therapy and one-half day per week of outpatient stroke clinic will take place throughout the year. Further details are provided below.
One or two years of additional training in basic or clinical research is available for those interested in an academic career.

The Washington University School of Medicine Stroke Service is based at Barnes-Jewish hospital, which serves as a local stroke center for the Saint Louis metropolitan area and a referral center for the central Midwest. Over 1200 patients with cerebrovascular disease were admitted in 2002. Residency training will be apportioned between inpatient services (including the neuro-ICU and stroke rehabilitation) outpatient services, instruction in ultrasound, education of house staff and medical students, and participation in original basic or clinical neuroscience research and clinical trials. The Section has two NIH Program Project grants, one each in the clinical and basic neuroscience of cerebrovascular disease as well as multiple other clinical and basic science research grants.

Our Stroke Center provides a wealth of patient encounter opportunities, as well as collaboration with an outstanding cerebrovascular scientists, clinicians, radiologists, and surgeons. Individuals who will have completed three years of Neurology residency by June 2004 are eligible to apply.
