Mark Jacquin, PhD

The long-term aim of our research is fourfold:

  1. to determine the cellular circuitry responsible for the functional organization of sensory systems;

  2. to uncover cellular and molecular principles controlling development of the mammalian peripheral and central nervous systems;

  3. to assess the structural and functional consequences of peripheral and central nervous system injury;

  4. to isolate effective strategies for repair of injured neural tissue.

The rodent somatosensory system is being used as a model because of its stereotyped normal organization which lends
itself to quantification, its known susceptibility to injury, and its clinical applications.

Medical Training

Originally from Pomona California, Dr. Jacquin received his BA in Psychology from Brandeis University and, in 1980, his PhD in Neurobiology from the City University of New York. Dr. Jacquin was soon appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry at Rutgers Medical School, and moved up through the ranks at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, moving to St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1987. He came to Washington University in 1994.For the past 20 years, Dr, Jacquin has directed an NIH program project currently entitled Molecular Mechanisms of Trigeminal Development which has just been approved for another 5 years of support.
